Paul Barker doesn't mention it but there is a back story to his book that's worth knowing. Before the weekly magazine New Society was absorbed into the New Statesman and slowly forgotten, Barker was its editor, and on March 20,1969, produced one of its most talked-about issues. Entitled "Non Plan: An Experiment in Freedom", it was a collaboration between architect Cedric Price, urban geographer Peter Hall, critic Reyner Banham and Barker himself. Its premise was that planners had made such a mess of things that non-planning could hardly be worse.
