When Dutch housing association Stadgenoot commissioned Tony Fretton Architects to design a seven-storey building in Amsterdam, it was with the unusual request that it have a life of 200 years. The masterplan for the site stipulated that buildings had to be brick, but the long life requirement meant the brickwork would have to be self-supporting instead of being hung from the reinforced concrete frame.rnThe building will be the first completed project to adopt the construction concept of "Solids", devised by the housing association a few years ago, whereby the building can be used for a number of different uses, whether private flats, live/work spaces, commercial units or a luxury hotel.
