HOK's Qatar mall is an oasis in the desert

HOK's London office has drawn up plans for Marina Mall - a retail and leisure facility on the east coast of Qatar. The Lusail development sits on a 37sq km site along the waterfront and the mall itself will have three levels totalling 60,000sqmwith a body of water running throughout. An additional 10,000sq m supermarket will be located in the basement. Barry Hughes, vice president at HOK London, said the building's design was inspired by the idea of a desert canyon and a "rich and green cavern protected by the overhanging walls of sand and stone". He added: "The fluid sculptural exterior complements the sur- rounding area, while the flow from exterior to interior draws people into the internal oasis, providing welcome protection from the desert sun."
