Outcry over Bute client's request for free work

A compctition to mastcrplan the transformation of a forest on the Isle of Bute has been condemned after the client asked bidding archi-tccts to do part of the work for free. The Bute Community Land Company (BCLC) bought 161ha of the Rhubodach forest estate from the film-maker Richard Attenborough last year as part of one of the largest community land buy-outs seen in Scotland. The organisation, run by island residents, is now seeking to appoint a project architect for a masterplan and the detailed design of a series of eco lodges, a forest hub including a cafe and visitor centre and improved access pathways into the forest with firms including Nord and Malcolm Frascr Architects in the running.
