A row has broken out over die cost of SOM's new headquarters building for Nato in Brussels. Politicians have questioned how Nato could spend €l billion on offices at a time when defence budgets are facing savage cuts, leaving front-line troops vulnerable. Britain alone is contributing ￡105 million. The building, die organisation's first purpose-built home in its 62- year history, was commissioned before the financial crisis and is scheduled for completion in 2015, three years later than originally planned. The design, by SOM and Belgian architect Assar, resembles "interlaced fingers" converging in a glazed central hall, intended to represent Nato's unity and transparency.
