The Twentieth Century Society has pledged to fight a decision to demolish one of the UK's largest surviving post-war prefab housing estates, in south-east London. The majority of Catford's Excalibur Estate will be torn down under plans by Lewisham Council. Only six of the 187 homes will be saved despite being given grade II listing by English Heritage last year. Meanwhile, housing minister Grant Shapps has halted plans to demolish a row of terraced houses, including the one where former Beatle Ringo Starr was born, in Liverpool. Last month, EH declined to list them.
