Protection for Summers

An award-winning housing development designed by Royston Summers has been granted conservation area status by its local authority. Lakeside Drive in Esher, Surrey, is considered one of the more significant works by the architect, who died last year. English Heritage described it as "an exceptional and probably unique post-war development of executive houses". It is rare for 1970s schemes to be considered for protection but the development of 17 houses was championed by a heritage officer at Elmbridge council and architect Michael Phillips.
