The U.S. public and corporate America have, in my opinion, begun to embrace the sustainability message in a way that will translate into high-performance buildings for every purpose. Take, for example, Wal-Mart's announced commitment to invest $500 million in upgrading the energy efficiency of its stores. The growing realization that global warming is in fact occurring and that the U.S. is critically dependent on getting off the "cheap-oil fix" will, I believe, lead to greater emphasis on low-carbon approaches to building design as well as to a "new urbanism" that focuses on dramatically reducing automobile use.
