To protect and beautify the 80-year-old concrete floor of the newly retrofitted Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., the Building Team selected a waterborne polyurethane coating. The 20,000-sf floor, which serves as the facility's main hallway, was severely damaged with extensive divots, spalls, and cracks. The flooring contractors needed to create a welcoming space that retained the building's historic feel while meeting LEED Platinum requirements. The restoration process included a cementitious overlay to repair the exist- ing concrete, an epoxy coating, and a two-component waterborne polyurethane coating from Covestro to protect against wear and stains long term. The selected topcoat features low VOCs and vapor permeability in a water-based, aliphatic polyurethane clearcoat. It provided performance characteristics similar to solvent-based systems, but with the ease of application associated with waterborne systems.
