A school in Kenya that will be net-zero for energy and water use and a zero-waste transfer station in Seattle are two of the projects selected by the American Institute of Architects' Committee on the Environment to receive COTE Top 10 Awards for 2019. Asilong Christian High School, West Pokot, Kenya, was designed by BNIM. Mah-lum Architects was the firm behind the design of Seattle's North Transfer Station, which will be able to handle 750 tons of materials per day. Other winners and their design firms: Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex at Northeastern University, Boston (Payette), a 236,240-sf home for four research disciplines (pictured). Amherst College New Science Center, Amherst, Mass. (Payette), with 76% less energy use than most labs. Frick Environmental Center, Pittsburgh (Bohlin Cywin-ski Jackson), which earned LEED Platinum and Living Building certifications. Daniels Building at One Spadina Crescent, The University of Toronto (NADAAA with Adamson Associates and ERA Architects), a renovation and expansion.
