An Integrated Broadcast-Broadband System That Merges ISDB-T With HbbTV 2.0

This paper shows that the coexistence of HbbTV applications and ISDB-T broadcasting is possible, paving the way to adopt HbbTV as a global hybrid standard. It presents the design of a prototype of a hybrid television system that integrates the ISDB-T broadcast standard with HbbTV applications, using the integrated broadcast and broadband (IBB) technologies standardized by ITU. Currently, each IBB television standard is associated with one digital television standard, leading to unique and different systems. We have designed, developed, and tested a complete hybrid television system, combining both, ISDB-T and HbbTV. The prototype includes the design of the internal architecture of a hybrid TV terminal that tunes on-air ISDB-T signals and can execute associated applications developed according to the HbbTV 2.0 standard guidelines, which was originally designed for DVB networks. The designed system supports different types of synchronization mechanisms between the broadcast ISDB-T signal and the associated HbbTV applications, including the MPEG timing and external media information standard. Five different HbbTV applications that include the use of companion screens were developed, and executed on the prototype.
