Ultra-high-speed cameras are able to capture instantaneous phenomena not visible to the human eye and render them visible in slow-motion video. At NHK STRL, we have developed an ultra-high-speed Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) capable of capturing one million frames per second as well as a compact color camera using this CCD. The camera has been used in production of various science and educational programs. In this article, we give an overview of the development of this ultra-high-speed CCD and camera and describe examples of using the camera in the production of science programs. We also report on the latest research and development on improving the performance of the ultra-high-speed CCD.
