Images are evaluated from various viewpoints and for various reasons, not only to evaluate the performance of video systems but also to evaluate the aesthetic aspects of video content and its effects on viewers. Subjective evaluation, which is mainly used in the evaluation of images and so forth, is a simple yet useful evaluation method, but is not well suited to the evaluation of complex physiological states that occur when watching images, such as emotional aspects and content effects. Coupled with the recent development of techniques for measuring biological information, there has been a rapid increase in attempts to use biological information to evaluate images, and further developments are expected in the future, such as obtaining new effects relating to psychological states that have hitherto been difficult to use in image quality evaluation. This paper discusses the issues of various image evaluation methods and explains image evaluation techniques using biological information. It also introduces a case study where images were evaluated on the basis of biological information at NHK STRL.
