摘要

As a mode of philosophical analysis, mathematical physics shows ever more precisely which are the essential features of our material universe, or at least of our models of our universe, and why they are essential. Moreover, the mathematical formalism and techniques we employ to Work out physical problems, and to push through derivations and to Prove theorems, are ontological, in that they say how the physical world (or, again, our models of it) is constituted. And the mathematical manipu- lations and approximative schemes we employ along the way are fully meaningful, in that what appear as devices and tricks and techniques are filled with physics (p. xiii).
