The world's footbridges for Berlin

Despite having Europe's largest network of inland waterways, Berlin has very few famous bridges - and hardly any of them footbridges. With the publication of this new book, in tandem with the Footbridge 2017 international conference which took place in the city in September, we see a range of possibilities demonstrating how Berlin could redress this balance. In a sector weary of footbridge design competitions which demand everything and offer slim rewards, this book underlines the generosity of spirit that pervades the triennial footbridge conference. Conference chair Mike Schlaich took a risk when he launched the event; having collaborated with the city authorities to identify six locations where footbridges would make a significant impact, he invited designers from around the world to submit their proposals as part of the conference programme.
