Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) was one of the most important artists and influential teachers of the 20th century-and a cherished friend and esteemed colleague to many. Between the years 1932 and 1947 Siskind was active in the documentary-oriented New York Photo League. As organizer of the League's feature group, he led many projects, most notably the Harlem Document, a collaborative and cultural series on Harlem. In the 1940s, Siskind shifted his interest toward abstraction and began to photograph found objects during visits to Martha's Vineyard and Gloucester, Massachusetts.
