EDMUND TESKE: POETIC VISIONARY

In early 1965, while I was studying drawing and photography at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, I read about a local photographer, Edmund Teske, in the Art Notes section of the Los Angeles Free Press. He was having a small retrospective exhibition in a gallery at a community ibrary in Palos Verdes Estates. So, that weekend, I drove for an hour south down the coast to reach my destination. I would not be disappointed. As I walked into the gallery, I was greeted by a captivating portrait of Edmund Teske. He projected a larger-than-life presence, perched on a sloping hillside, firmly positioned behind a large tripoded view camera, his dark cloth draped over his shoulders like a long cape―Errol Flynn style. "Could this be the Wizard of Oz," I remember thinking to myself, "reincarnated as a photographer?"
