Stepping into the small town of Pingyao is like entering a movie director's dream of ancient China. This Ming Dynasty town, now a World Heritage Site, has no cars, no tall buildings, and none of the grandiose modernism prevalent throughout contemporary China. Some of the more ornate architecture, hidden among the maze of stone-paved streets, belies Pingyao's 19th-century status as an important banking center of northern China. More recently, Pingyao provided the unique setting for the 3rd Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP), held September 16-22, 2003.
