I like photographing in New York," says Louis Stettner. "The unexpected happens here. In the chaos and disorder I can see the human element." While speaking, he gestures with both hands, fingers stained with darkroom chemicals. It seems very French. It is early morning on the upper West Side of Manhattan, and the room is stacked floor to ceiling with boxes of prints. Stettner has been taking pictures for 70 years, a chronicler of everyday life. One might label him a photographer of the New York School, but one would have to add a Paris School footnote since he has divided his life between the two cities of light since the 1940s, these days spending summers in New York and the rest of the year in Paris.
