Light is the medium through which Rolf Koppel weaves his lyrical still lifes and floral compositions. "It's in the province of light to be both a designator of surface and a signifier of emotional and spatial depth," explains Koppel. "Well-rendered light in photography seems to have an essential and emotiona effect on people, possibly as a reminder of nature or basic creation. A rendering of the gradual shading from bright sun to deep shadow in the lap of a bowl or the play of light on white drapery can set up a cascade of revelatory experiences. The sense of light as a benediction, as form and emotion, is very important to me." With a background in visua art and design that includes a degree from Hunter College, where he studied with the painter Robert Motherwell, and graduate studies at the University of Iowa, where he first took up photography and later taught art and design, Koppel brings a personal vision to his work that encompasses the wider scope of all the visual arts.
