Marilyn Szabo had a great hour in Venice. She was there in 1998 attending the Venice Biennale, an enormous biannual art show. She roamed this ancient island with her camera, enchanted by the exotic setting, the gentle light, the soft lapping of tidewater against the age-old stone walls. Within this propitious hour she shot the last three photographs that appear in this portfolio. "It was coup," she laughs, "to pick out and shoot that many photographs in one hour that I really like and find worth printing. I was just out looking for beautiful things. I really like the fact that in Arizona, where I live, there's no water, and that in Venice it's the complete opposite. People travel by boat to the door of their house, tie up the boat, and go inside!"
