When Peter Fetterman first visited California from his native England 25 years ago, a friend took him to a dinner party. There happened to be some photographs on the wall that Fetterman found totally mesmerizing. The host of the party was trying to sell a few of them, and Fetterman naively asked the price of Max Yavno's Cathay Circle. Fetterman had grown up as a scrappy working-class kid in the East End of London. He had an awe of all things Hollywood, and this picture seemed to sum up his childhood fantasies of the glitz and glamour of showbiz. When his host offered to sell the print for $400, Fetterman was shocked. He had a total of $2,000 to start a new life in this exotic, distant land. But there was something about that picture that obsessed him. He couldn't believe that he agreed to buy it, spending a quarter of his net worth on a photograph by somebody he had never heard of. That's how he started—by accident.
