Adam Gerlach likens his night-time landscapes to expressions of transcendental experience—to instances in which the photographic act creates a new perception of reality. "To me, the act of photographing is about getting away for a moment and stepping into another time and place," remarb the 29-year-old Santa Barbara-based photographer. "It's not about strict reality. It's more about a place where we want to go than where we are. Photography for me is almost meditative. It's a moment in life where time stops. During the time I'm exposing film, I'm forced to slow down and reflect. In a sense, what I like to capture is moments between moments."
