Larry Fink is attracted to light—day-light, nightlight, flash light. "Light, for me, is part of the decisive moment," he says. If there is none, he creates it, casting an oblique wand on the scene before him, never quite knowing what he might capture. "My pictures are informed to a great degree by chance," he says. "There's no possible way to absolutely know what you've done. When I go back to the darkroom and look at the contacts later, it's always a surprise. Flash is faster than the human eye." Fink thrives on the surprises the camera reveals. "It's riveting in its clarity. The picture makes a hard assumption." Fink himself makes no hard assumptions. "Here I am 64 and I look at people with a similar sense of wonder as I did when I was a kid. Every time you come across another human being you're basically in the business of sniffing them out, animals that we are, only I use a camera to make it long-lasting."
