摘要

In the early 1990s, the fall of Communism throughout eastern Europe drew a wave of visitors to the former Soviet bloc countries. Some went seeking relatives, some closure, some history—ways of discerning one's place in the world. Sylvia de Swaan was one such traveler. In 1990 she took a leave of absence from her job and embarked on her first pilgrimage. She carried with her a camera, photographs from childhood, half-remembered stories her mother had told her, and the shadows of her own memories. It was the first of seven journeys she would make over the next 10 years for the project she named Return—her attempt to find a history that had literally been erased.
