DODY WESTON THOMPSON

The photography of Dody Weston Thompson has both aesthetic and historic significance. She enjoyed a unique position in American photography during the second half of the 20th century, having been apprentice to Edward Weston, wife of Brett Weston, and assistant to Ansel Adams — three founding members of the f.64 Group. Her own career spans work as a photographer, writer, historian, teacher, filmmaker, and co-founder of Aperture. Bom Dora Harrison in New Orleans in 1923, she first published as Dody Warren. But Edward Weston suggest- ed that she adopt just one professional name, and thus her prints are signed "Dody." Dody posed as a teenager for the imaginative photographer of the nostalgia and fantasy of the old South—Clarence John Laughlin. She earned a New England summer theater scholarship as an actress with a drama group, then continued drama and poetry at Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University. She then studied for two years at North Carolina's Black Mountain College, whose innovative faculty included Josef Albers of the Bauhaus. She remembers Pearl Harbor Sunday there.
