It was during the summer of 1968 that a high school senior from Duluth, Minnesota, first dreamed of traveling with his camera, capturing the poetry and truth of an exciting, fast-changing world. Inspired by the life and work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, D. R. Martin hoped to follow in the master's footsteps, but the dream was greater than his opportunities. Instead, Martin chose to find the meaning of the world in his own backyard. "Maybe I can't go to India or Bali or Paris to take pictures, I thought to myself, but I can hit the streets in Duluth," recalls Martin, who estimates having taken as many as 6,000 frames between 1968 and 1973, primarily in Minnesota but also in Europe during two summers spent there.
