Ric Savid's empathetic portraits of the Philippine people reflect the artist's effort to share his fascination with the residents of this Southeast Asian country in a way that transcends the usual parameters of documentary photography. While cognizant of the contrasts between Western and Oriental culture, Savid strives to balance artistry and humanistic intimacy with a broader examination of social issues. "I'm not the type of photographer who's on a mission to do things in a photojournalistic way," explains Savid, who first went to the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer in the mid-1970s and was assigned to the southern island of Mindanao. "Even though I like the contrast between American and Philippine culture, in the Philippines I'm more a finder of light and people than a searcher for conceptual scenes. When I take a picture, I feel like I'm photographing an emotion, one that I can feel inside."
