Matt Black is one of the most original and widely published documentary photographers of recent years. He specializes in long-term photoessays focused on rural communities located in California's Central Valley (where he grew up and still lives), as well as in southern Mexico. His attention centers on communities marked by disintegrating social and economic infrastructures, but the extreme tonality and spatial dynamics of his photographs imbue them with a powerful emotional resonance and a sense of mystery that transcend any political interpretations. Black is concerned primarily with the resilience and pride of his subjects, including immigrants from Mexico and Southeast Asia, farm laborers, and Dust Bowl-era African American sharecroppers. His rare level of commitment-he spends six months to two years on a particular project-has been rewarded with numerous grants and awards from prestigious foundations and organizations.
