摘要

This examination of 20th-century photographic portraiture is a thought-provoking look at this genre. A discussion rather than a survey, it starts with Curtis's portraits of the North American Indians, and meanders through the next century examining both the sociological and cultural background of the photographers, their subject matter, and influence of said subjects on photography in genera . Portraits were often a reflection of societal mores. As photography became more democratic, the subjects did also, whether they be the peasants of Martin Chambi and Irving Penn, the workers of August Sander and Bill Brandt, or the idiosyncratic portraits of Diane Arbus.
