In her elegiac "Taylor Creek Park" series, Carol Rooney tends to abstract the willows in a natural ravine setting that runs about two miles long near her home in the east end of Toronto. The subtle dramatics engender a visual dialog that speaks of bones and weariness and sometimes a little hope.When she began the project, the Canadian photographer used a rawboned artist's toolbox: inclement weather, an umbrella and a camera. Only overcast days, snow and rain would send her out - the light being flatter, gentler and more diffused - to capture a sense of the trees as they settled into, and under, the harsher elements of winter or autumn, some of the trees emitting a real sense of the threadbare.
