Surreal Nudes and Revolutionary Fashion

Bill Brandt was, and arguably remains, the preeminent male photographer of the female nude. His work in this genre was neither titillating nor exploitative. Brandt never portrayed women as objects of male desire; his appreciation for and representation of female beauty transcended sexist objectifi-cation. His nudes are strangely sensual, but their eroticism was always framed through an abstract, surreal perspective. His models are more ghostly apparitions than flesh-and-blood creatures, inhabiting a dreamlike realm rather than the real world.
