Photography offers both the picture taker and the picture viewer many physical and metaphysical levels of looking at the world. We see pictures of scientific fact, a photomicrograph of a virus or one of a distant galaxy shot with the aide of a telescope. Those images help us understand our place in the universe and further our understanding of the physical world. Then there are photographs more difficult to categorize. They exist only though the accidental union of time, location and an empa-thetic nature that become melded together through the vision of a particular human intelligence and sensibility. Such is the mind and the resultant photography of Kirill Surov.
