This Review summarizes recent advances in the phys- iology and microbial biodiversity related to the removal of nitrogen oxides (NO_x) from gaseous pollu- tants. A brief overview is given of recent chemical technologies and the biotechnological potential for removal of NO_x from flue gases: microbiological pro- cesses related to NO_x rempval [aerobic denitri- fication, hydrogen-stimulated and thermophilic deni- trification; anaerobic oxidation of ammonium (NH_4), combined nitrification-denitrification pro- cesses]; metabolism of nitric oxide by denitrifiers and other micro-organisms; reaction of nitric oxide in higher temperature; combination of nitrogen and sulphur removal processes.
