Fiat Powertrain Technology (FPT) is concentrating its efforts on improving gasoline engines. The firm expects diesel's current market share to wane.rnMore than half of Fiat Group's worldwide sales will soon come from the sub-A, A- and B-segments. FPT believes the cost of meeting future emissions standards will make diesel engines too expensive for its small cars.rnFPT's research and technology chief Lucio Bernard said: "Our R&D effort is focused on spark ignition engines. We need effective low-cost powertrains - there will be a reversal of the trend for diesel's increasing share of the market."
