Advances in computer technology have made it easier and more cost-effective for companies to advertise and sell their products and services on the internet to customers throughout the United States-and that includes factory-built home dealers and manufacturers, many of whom now sell homes on the internet to customers in other states. But the very nature of internet sales-i.e., lack of (or limited) discussion between buyer and seller before a sale-poses some serious risks, like unsophisticated buyers misunderstanding terms of the purchase agreement, or mis-communication between buyer and seller regarding a home's features and amenities. These risks can lead a buyer to sue the dealer and manufacturer for misrepresentation or predatory sales practices. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of costly litigation.
