The chaps at the club were engaged in an animated discussion about the merits of various grape varieties when I dropped in for a quick glass of neck oil while I was in town last week. It seems the debate had been generated by Max Allen, who recently wrote a piece in the The Weekend Australian championing the currently unfashionable Cabernet Sauvignon. After many colourful exchanges, it came to pass that while everyone had their favourites, with perhaps Shiraz winning overall, almost everybody could find something to like about most varieties. I am no Pinotphile, in fact I am suspicious of some chaps who make it their beverage of choice. However, I have to concede that the two greatest wines to have passed my lips have been Burgundies so I can sympathise with those who continue their efforts to either find or make their Holy Grail of all red wines. One chap was not so agreeable when it came to Pinot, however. He said trying to find a great Pinot was like looking for truffles-'you have to root around in a lot of muck before you find one!' he said.
