Two faces of Europe

In December 2005 I visited Europe on a consulting mission. My first visit was to Germany, then to Spain, and finally Hungary. Visiting such different places over such a short period left me considering the various aspects of viticulture in Europe, and their implications for the Australasian wine industry. In essence, the growth in the New World wine industry has been at the expense of Europe, where declining domestic consumption has also exacerbated the problem. The last few years have seen protests by French growers at their grape surplus and now vine removals are taking place.
