Garganega (pronounced gar-GAN-ega) is the fifth most important variety in Italy with plantings in 1990 recorded at over 13,000ha. It is the principal variety of Soave, where it has a long history. The best-known early reference to the variety comes from 1495 in Pier de' Crescenzi's Trattato dell'Agricoltura (Treatise on Agriculture) which makes reference to Garganica. Pliny, the elder, is also quoted as having made reference to Garganega but the specific reference is elusive. Pliny has become a popular chap in 2000 years; there is a chance that utterances attributed to him could have occupied more than one lifetime.
