Australian wine sector: demand assessment 2007

Central to this year's supply and demand assessment is the dramatic swing from over-supply, that is calculated to have peaked at year-end 2005-06, to expected supply constraints by 2007-08.rnThere have been unprofitable bulk wine shipments in the immediate past that have existed because of the over-supply. Underpinning the current assessment of demand is a redefinition of export 'demand' that excludes these unprofitable sales from the historical performances. Unprofitable sales are not considered demand pull but, rather, supply push designed to draw down surplus inventory. From this point, growth in 'real' demand is expected to leave exports in 2007-08 marginally lower in volume terms.
