The best Australian news photographs are well known; the best Australian news photographers are anything but, their faces hidden behind their cameras. Do the names Wayne Ludbey or John O'Gready mean anything to you? The former took the 1993 picture of Aboriginal footballer Nicky Winmar pulling up his jumper and pointing to his skin in front of Collingwood fans who had racially abused him throughout the game. The latter took the picture of Norm Provan and Arthur Summons covered in mud from head to toe and embracing after the 1963 rugby league grand final. So iconic has the photograph become that a sculpture of it is featured on the NRL premiership trophy.
