Alan Knight grew up in a working class family in Coorparoo, on the edge of Brisbane's urban sprawl, believing he was stupid. A sickly scholarship kid who hated sport, missed classes and failed his matriculation, Alan had resigned himself to a pedestrian life shuffling papers in the public service. Half a century later, however, he is remembered as one of Australia's leading journalism scholars, only the third person in the country to be awarded a journalism professorship, and a teacher and mentor to some of Australia's top journalists.
