Size, function options in SD, HD, full HD units

Forty-two inches is the largest screen size in popular home LCD TVs being exported by mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea suppliers interviewed in this report. However, this has not stopped some of them from raising the bar and offering larger-screen units to catch attention in the major brand-dominated international market, or establish presence in emerging economies. The selection consists of standard definition (SD), high-definition (HD) and full HD models carrying various combinations of optional or standard built-in features such as analog or digital TV tuners, DVD playback, memory card readers, and USB and HDMI ports. The DVB-T standard is mostly adopted but requests for ATSC tuners are also accommodated. Also available are units with game function or Bluetooth connectivity with headphones. Complementing this suite of features are various housing and speaker designs. For mainland China suppliers, most LCD TVs for export fall under the small-screen segment with 22in as the largest, and target to capture emerging overseas markets. Production, however, also covers 32in, 40in and 42in models, with forthcoming releases in 52in. Product development remains focused on the addition of value-enhancing functions. Hong Kong suppliers offer 15in to 42in units with larger models planned for release this year.
