Future SDRs will lead to a significant change in radiocommunications. Their flexible configurability and adaptivity enable the setup of permanent, interruption-free radio links-as required for network-enabled operations. Of course, there is no way to simultaneously switch all forces everywhere in the field to network enabled operations while achieving full performance. To meet this challenge, future SDRs can be expanded in stages. This means that the associated risks and costs can be kept within manageable limits. Multiple radio links with highly diverse features will be available to users all at the same time. Thus, interruptions due to overextended homogeneous radio networks or long distances between radio nodes can be avoided. In quasi-stationary operation, antennas with higher gain and higher footpoints can already achieve sufficient ranges even with broadband radiocommunications schemes. Smart antennas with their potential to improve range and anti-jam capability represent a promising technology for future generations of mobile radio equipment. If physical laws are taken into consideration while planning future radio systems for higher data rates, the principle of adaptivity can be used for network-enabled operations. The technical prerequisite is a new generation of SDRs. The flexible, broadband SDRs from Rohde & Schwarz that will be available on the market in the future are ideal for implementing adaptive functions of this kind.
