At present, the broadband Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is experiencing rapid development, and various new technologies and solutions continually emerge. With the advantages of large capacity, easy expansion, low cost etc, the Metro DWDM makes MAN deployment more efficient and simple, and evolves as the ideal equipment for MAN construction. The necessity of metro DWDM construction may be explained by the fact that nowadays most MAN services are transported through SDH/SONET networks, mainly designed for voice traffic but not for data services. In recent years, with the rapid development of networks and network services, the MANs have been seriously overloaded. Although voice traffic is still gradually increasing, the number of clients using data services is increasing much more rapidly. The traditional SDH/SONET networks have become a bottleneck between enterprise LANs and the backbone networks. If appropriate measures are not taken to tackle these problems, the telecommunication infrastructure will sooner or later break down under such high pressure.
