In recent years there has been an outpouring of research and publications on diaspora and transnationalism. This book is one outcome of the ambitious project on Indians overseas initiated by the South Asian Studies Programme at the National University of Singapore. That project also resulted in the Encyclopedia of the Indian Diaspora while The South Asian Diaspora provides in-depth case studies and essays. Although many chapters engage with the rich literature on diaspora and transnationalism, the extent to which this is theoretically challenged is uneven. Thankfully the editors, Rajesh Rai and Peter Reeves, address some of the key theoretical and historical dilemmas of diaspora, transnationalism and identity pertinent to the South Asian diaspora; particularly that emanating from the old linkages of colonial capital and the new globalisation, dominated by skilled and professional migrants.
