Successful integration requires extremely small components that can perform more than one task. Voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) are among the principal devices finding the most extensive use in generating electric waves for transmission and reception. Because of the usefulness of VCOs, many makers of chip sets are attempting to integrate a VCO into an LSI. However, it is extremely difficult to mass-produce such composite devices having complex functions, and still achieve excellent yields. Elsewhere in the VCO vanguard, however, TDK Corp. has developed a 5 x 4mm VCO, one of the smallest and lightest of its kind. It features low power consumption, an excellent carrier-to-noise (C/N) ratio, and stable operation. In particular, the manufacturer is promoting the model that works specifically in Personal Digital Cellular 800MHz (PDC800) cellular phone systems.
