Backing CDMA, Korea Moves in on World Markets for Mobile Phones

Mobile phones represent one of Korea's fastest-growing items among high-tech ex-ports. In 2000, Korea's mobile communications industry generated 14.4 percent of the countries information technology exports. Shipments of mobile handsets and related wireless systems totaled US$7.4 billion for the year. In the first four months of 2001, exports of mobile phones and similar sets jumped 12.4 percent from the corresponding period last year, to $2,752 billion. Much of the momentum came from shipments to North American and Asian markets.
