In recent years, touch panels are being used in a greater variety of devices. Touch panels come in a number of different types as well, including pressure-sensitive resistive touch types, electrostatic designs that detect capacitance, optical configurations that detect light, and ultrasonic sensor technologies that detect high frequency waves. Until now, four-wire resistive touch controllers were considered mainstream and used for gaming devices, personal digital assistants, and the like. However, driven by the demand for smartphones and tablets, light (touch) pressure operation and multi-touch functionality are garnering increased attention.
