“As we enter the second century of jazz history, it is becoming increasingly diffcult to nevaluate the earliest years of its development.” So begins Mark Berresford in his intro-nduction and, while this is true, it is also plain to see that there is still considerable work nto be done researching and documenting jazz, despite the fact that so much has been nwritten about it. For decades, jazz was largely ignored by the traditional academic world nand while passionate, the amateur researchers who flled the void suffered from some nshortcomings, the consequences of which are still being felt today.
